Call for Course Proposals: Share your Passion and Expertise

The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association invites lifelong learning course proposals from Johns Hopkins alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners on a rolling basis for its Odyssey program. Lifelong learning courses are typically 4 – 6 weeks total and taught online. The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association can assist instructors with identifying on-campus teaching or classroom space at Johns Hopkins (subject to availability) and provide limited technical assistance for virtual courses. Use the Odyssey Syllabus Template as a guide to ensure proposed course information is clearly communicated and syllabus statements promoting academic integrity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are included.

Proposal submission for Spring 2025 is closed.

Promotion and Enrollment

The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association promotes all Odyssey lifelong learning program courses. However, to best ensure the minimum number of participants enroll in each course, instructors are encouraged to robustly promote their courses through their own networks. Low enrollment (fewer than 5 participants) may result in the cancellation of a given course. A final determination of course cancellation based on low enrollment is at the sole discretion of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association.

Stipends

Instructors’ stipends are based on the number of (non-student) participants per course hour based on a three-tiered scale: $75 per course hour stipend for 5 participants; $100 per course hour stipend for 6-10 participants and $125 per course hour stipend for 11+ participants. A single session course pays a flat rate of $100.  Odyssey program instructors are considered independent contractors and are solely responsible for all income and/or other tax obligations and the completion of financial paperwork provided by Johns Hopkins, on behalf of the Odyssey program, to initiate payment.  Odyssey instructor appointments are made exclusively on a per course basis for a given term, carry no fringe benefits or retirement, and are considered part-time appointments.

Recording Virtual Classes

The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association strongly recommends virtual instructors record course content as a courtesy for registrants who may miss one or more sessions. Recordings should be distributed on request to registrants by the instructor. Any recordings provided to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association by the instructor will be retained solely for registrant learning purposes and stored for the duration of the course.

*Due to the specialized nature of the course, the Alumni Life Design Experience course will not be recorded.
